Breaking medical news today, a new drug could help prevent strokes from happening again. Bayer's Oceanic stroke trial is being presented at the International Stroke Conference. The study shows asyndexian lowers the risk of another stroke when added to standard treatment without raising bleeding risk. About 800,000 people have a stroke each year and up to 30% have another one. The FDA has given this drug a fast track status and it could be the first approved therapy in a new class of safer blood clot prevention drugs. Cleveland Clinic is part of this study and we still have a few more weeks of winter and chances are you or someone you love is battling an annoying cold. That's not bad enough that you need to see a doctor, but do those old fashioned, tried and true remedies really work? Consumer Reports put them to the test. A runny nose, scratchy throat and deep cough are no fun. There are a few things you can do to nurse an irritating cold at home. A spoonful of honey mixed in hot tea can ease congestion, coughing and soothe throat pain. Gargling salt water can also help. And your mom was right about chicken soup. It's hydrating and provides electrolytes. Another good idea. A cool mist humidifier can be a great option since dry air can worsen nasal congestion. So you want to set your humidifier to 30 to 50% humidity, but should produce enough moisture. You can find a good one for under 50 bucks. And when it's time for sleep, an extra pillow or two can make a big difference to keep your head elevated and let your sinuses drain, helping unstuff the stuffy nose. If you decide to take medicine, choose wisely. If you see any oral medications with phenylphrine on the store shelves, you should probably skip them. Researchers found that this drug really doesn't work any better than a placebo for relieving nasal congestion. The FDA has even proposed removing it as an active ingredient from cold medicines. Another medication to be wary of? Nasal decongestant sprays. You can use them for a couple of days, but no longer than that because after 72 hours they can cause rebound nasal congestion. When should you see your doctor? It's a good idea to get checked out for flu or COVID-19 when you first get sick, since antiviral treatments are available. Otherwise, you'll want to see a doctor if you have problems like trouble breathing, a fever that doesn't go away for more than four days, or other symptoms like a cough that don't go away or get significantly better after 10 days or so. Other ways to stay healthy this winter. No shocker here. Eat right, walk about 30 minutes a day and get plenty of rest. Studies show those who get less than five hours of sleep at night are 44% more likely to report a head or chest cold than those who sleep longer, like 7 or 8 hours.
